Stormwater Capture and Reuse

Friends Center’s 150 year old meetinghouse is protecting the watershed by capturing the water that hits its 10,000 square foot roof.

The rainwater travels down the downspouts into holding tanks in the basement.  From there it is filtered and pumped to the office building to flush the toilets.

Friends Center is a demonstration site for keeping water onsite helping to prevent overflows at water treatment plants.  Water from heavy storms causes raw sewage to be spilled into the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers as many as 50 times per year.
